"Victory comes... to the last man standing" -Angron, Primarch of the XIIth Legion

Faction Overview

The World Eaters (WE) are one of the playable Factions in The Horus Heresy: Legions. Not having a unique mechanic but being masters of the Berzerk, Rage and Savage traits, the WE play style focuses on destroying your opponent as fast as possible using any resource at your disposal, even the life of your own units. With lots of board-damage and removals, aggressive units and an entire pool of Duelist Warlords, you can control the board at your leisure, making them ideal for ending matches before turn 10. The World Eaters were the fourth Faction to be reworked, moving its original set of cards to Legacy.

Strengths:

  • Aggression at every stage of the match, rewarding attacking in the form of Rage, Savage and buffs.
  • With all Warlords being capable of being build as Duelists or Mono-Warlord, you don't have to worry that much about preservation or trading (as your cards will support this play style).
  • Lots of Troop draw, as well as Troop support (but only for Astartes ones).
  • One of the strongest Faction for Aggro/Duelist decks.
  • Many indirect and board damage cards.

Weakness:

  • Over extenuation. Most of your matches will end with your warlord at low health, so if your enemy can mitigate the damage you inflict, or otherwise negate it, you'll end up in a situation where you're "killing yourself".
  • Berzerk can prove to be fatal in that regard too, specially on warlords, as against heavy front liners or high damage units your trading becomes lessened. Because, even if loosing life is your main attribute, sometimes holding out on attacks is the correct answer.
  • When building a Duelist deck, you'll need to have the proper cards (for that specific warlord), or you won't be able to fully exploit it.
  • Suffer greatly against heavy anti-aggro decks, or full Control ones.

Gameplay

The WE Troops main gameplay revolves around a "fast" or "unrelenting" assault type of play, with many doing some type of direct or indirect damage (to the enemy or your units), and taking advantage of attacks with Savage, Blood Thirst and the trigger of Rage.

The WE Tactics main gameplay revolves around buffing your units, specially your Warlord, and maintaining them alive with varied types of heals.

Most of the WE Warlords focus on dueling (as all of them can be build with that Archetype in mind).

The WE have Archetypes like: Aggro, Duelist, Midrange, Mono Warlord.

Lore
The World Eaters, originally known as the War Hounds, were also once the XIIth Legion of the twenty Space Marine Legions, and one of the first to betray the Emperor of Mankind for the service of Chaos and the Warmaster Horus. Their Primarch Angron was raised on the world of Nuceria as a slave-warrior, driven by a cybernetic cranial implant called the Butcher's Nails into savage bouts of uncontrollable violence for the entertainment of the masses. But Angron did not remain a slave for long, for he was possessed of the indomitable will of a Primarch, and he rallied his fellow gladiators to break the chains of their bondage, slay their oppressors and escape to freedom. As the dawn of the final battle rose, the Emperor came for his long lost gene-son. When seeing that not even a Primarch could prevail against such odds, teleported Angron to his ship, and though he was saved from certain death as all his comrades died in his absence, he never forgave his gene-father for what he would forever view as a gross betrayal of a warrior's vows to his battle-kin. Thus, forever sementing his hate on his father, the Imperium, and even his own Legion. It wasn't until his first captain, Kharn , manage to convince him that he would command his Legion. Though, seeing them inferior to his lost brothers of Nuceria , would exact decimation of the Legion at every chance he would consider they have failed his expectations. After the World Eaters civil war (know as the Ghenna Massacre) was fought over the implantation of the Butcher's Nails in every member of the Legion by Angron, the former War Hound's were transformed into bloodthirsty berserkers, erasing their former ideals of honour and discipline, the Nails causing constant, excruciating pain when not engaged in battle, driving the Legion into an unrelenting fury. This unending agony further distorts their sense of reason, making them almost incapable of reason and self-control. As the hour of the Horus Heresy grew near, Horus had little difficulty corrupting the bitter and unhappy Angron. Horus was able to feed the flames of Angron's discontent with the Emperor's prior behaviour, reinforcing Angron's perception that he had been betrayed and that the Emperor was a moral weakling. When the Sons of Horus broke with the Emperor's Imperium, Angron and the World Eaters were with them. At the Battle of Isstvan V, also known as the Drop Site Massacre, saw Angron and the World Eaters unleashed, their assault splitting the Raven Guard's line of communication from that of the Iron Hands, and almost wiping out Corax' Legion. Now, with only rage and violence in their mind, they truly have become the Eaters of Worlds, and their Primarch hungers for Terra itself.
Trivia
  • The "Daemon" form of Angron (after triggering his Whispers), is based on His 40k version of the setting, instead of the "Horus Heresy era" form.
