"Death is nothing compared to vindication" -Konrad Curze, Primarch of the VIIIth Legion

Faction Overview

The Night Lords (NL) are one of the playable Factions in The Horus Heresy: Legions. As the undisputed Lords of Terror, the NL play style focuses on fast and unexpected assault, while debilitating the enemy board as well as isolating their warlord for a swift kill. "Murderers first", exemplified in their unique trait, rewards you for overwhelmingly destroying any threat you face. The Night Lords were the 8th Faction to be reworked, moving their original pool of cards to Legacy.

Strengths:

  • Very fast Faction. With several flankers, as well as ways to give your troops Flank.
  • A lot of removals and disruption cards.
  • Powerful duelist warlords.
  • Murder can be triggered with any damage dealt, not just attacks.
  • Great at ending the match before turn 10.

Weakness:

  • A "glass-cannon" Faction, meaning that while it has powerful offensive capabilities, their troops are some of the weakest of the game (Hp wise).
  • Very Legendary/Epic card reliant.
  • Not good at prolonged games (turn 10+), and susceptible to heavy control.
  • A lot of the value from Murder can be lost in some scenarios, if you pursue triggering it (spending more resources for the proc).

Lore
The Night Lords are synonymous with terror and murder, for their favored mode of warfare is the unfettered application of brutal, overwhelming force. They show no mercy whatsoever, eschewing all subtlety and guile for wanton bloodshed and destruction. While such an approach might appear mindless, at one time it was different. Originally known as the VIIIth Legion, the Night Lords first recruits were from the stinking ancient prisons of Terra. Besides accentuating their paleness of skin, the gene-seed of their primarch gave the sons of the Terran underworld the ability to see through darkness to a degree that far exceeded that of the Astartes of other Legions. Their Primarch, Konrad Curze, was found on Nostramo (a world of perpetual night, plagued by both systematic corruption and endemic violence), where he had risen to a position of dominance over his world. Curze's rule as Nostramo's "Dark King" was not one of beneficence, however, but one of fear and repression. Despite the brutality of his methods, Konrad Curze's actions appear to have been motivated by a deep, if twisted, sense of justice. In the brutal underworld in which he had matured, the Primarch had learned that only total dominance would suffice and that to show any sign of weakness was to invite treachery. After his discovery, he underwent a period of training under the tutelage of Fulgrim, primarch of the Emperor's Children, who introduced him to not only wider military stratagems, but also Imperial culture, specifically that of Terra itself. Curze's experiences upon Nostramo in his self-appointed role as the Night Haunter had instilled in him the philosophy of terror, whereby he had inspired obedience to the law by fear of extreme punishment. The Night Lords therefore developed a practice of regularly using excessive force to defeat their enemies, as well as publicizing these actions so that other potential transgressors would be well aware of what could happen to them should they break faith with the Imperium. When his brothers began to turn on him, Curze turned to his tutor and supposed friend for counsel and confession. A sufferer of prophetic visions apparently all of his life, Curze told Fulgrim of his own great fear; that he had foreseen the Emperor killing him and that the Legiones Astartes would endlessly battle each other in a perpetual civil war. Fulgrim, shocked and worried by Curze's behaviour and mental state, informed their brother Rogal Dorn of these visions and claims. Dorn then confronted Curze over what he saw as this dishonourable besmirchment of the Emperor's name; the conversation came to blows, with Curze beating his brother bloody. Subsequently, accepting being placed under arrest for this action, Curze entered confinement to await the judgement of the other Primarchs. Such a verdict was never made, as before a conclave of the primarchs could be held Konrad Curze, after hearing that crime and corruption had returned to Nostramo in his absence, decided to refuse the entire process and escaped from detention. He swiftly rejoined his legion and took his fleet to Nostramo, the planet that had betrayed him, where he ordered all the ships in his fleet to fire upon, causing it to be destroyed. Although the Night Lords had gone rogue, the Horus Heresy erupted before anything could be done about it. When the Warmaster Horus revealed his treachery and plunged the galaxy into the fires of civil war, Curze embraced the Traitors' cause and threw himself into a bitter campaign of death and destruction, giving full vent to his most violent urges. It was never sufficient to simply defeat an enemy army. Curze taught his Legion to make an example of those who stood against them, to destroy their enemies' cities, slay their kin and display their broken corpses as a message to all others. Once unfettered by Horus' need to drive on Terra and their tenuous allegiance with the powers of Chaos, the Night Lords went on to conduct a campaign of terror that continued to echo down the millennia to this day, wreaking bloody murder across the galaxy.
