Faction Overview

The Iron Warriors (IW) are one of the playable Factions in The Horus Heresy: Legions. Being the masters of Siege craft, the IW will tear down anything the opponent brings. With a play style focused on strong Troops to hold the line, Attrition warfare and many types of damages, you'll slowly but surely, gain the upper hand and make your enemies learn the meaning of "Iron Within. Iron Without". The Iron Warriors were the 9th Faction to be reworked, moving their original pool of cards to Legacy.

Strengths:

  • Strong, well-rounded units, with tons of support for them.
  • Several forms of direct/board damage, as well as ordnance.
  • Lots of Front Line troops, and ways to deal with enemies front liners.
  • A lot of troops with Vantage (and ways to give them that trait), which combos great with Attrition.
  • One of the best "Control" type Faction, as your best plays comes mid-to-late game, or "Burn" type, with so many forms of damage.
  • Strong anti-aggro cards.

Weakness:

  • One of the slowest Faction in the game, as even with Vantage or ways to load Siege, you'll almost always only act on the next turn you set your cards.
  • As stated, because your best plays are at late game, your early game is very weak, and fast enemies will beat you if not careful.
  • Siege and Attrition are powerful abilities, but both require energy to be spent at a constant rate that will disrupt your curve.
  • Non flankers, or unstoppable units, so you can only rely on direct damage to remove specific troops.

Lore
The Iron Warriors, the IVth Legion of Space Marines, specialized in siege warfare and the reduction of fortified positions, which made them natural rivals of the Imperial Fists even before the Heresy. The Iron Warriors are also fierce close-range fighters, witnesses comparing their ferocity to the berserkers of the World Eaters or the Blood Angels. They make common use of slave-soldiers as cannon fodder to wither the ammunition supplies of the besieged and to locate the positions of enemy gun emplacements. The Iron Warriors were the Emperor's finest siege troops and their Primarch, Perturabo, was the equal of Rogal Dorn in the arts of fortification and strategy (which in turn would turn into a bitter rivalry). When the Horus Heresy came, it was perhaps inevitable that the two primarchs should find themselves on opposite sides of the galactic civil war. Perturabo grew up upon the world of Olympia, a mountainous planet divided into constantly warring city-states. Raised by Dammekos, the "Tyrant of Lochos", Perturabo learned from the culture in which he found himself the arts of the siege, for Olympia afforded plenty of opportunity to study both the theory and the practise of this highly specialised branch of warfare. When the Great Crusade finally reached Olympia and the Emperor told Perturabo of his place in the wider galaxy, the primarch pledged his devotion to the Imperium, and assumed the mantle of the Primarch of the IVth Legion. Yet, Perturabo appears to have grown ever more resentful of his role within the Great Crusade, and perhaps in an effort to prove his superiority over Dorn and others amongst his brother primarchs, he accepted ever more arduous missions on behalf of his Legion. The break point came when the people of Olympia rebelled against the rule of the Lord of Iron. His anger and resentment finally unleashed, he enacted such fearsome vengeance that countless innocents were slaughtered and entire cities burned. In the aftermath of his vengeance, Perturabo knew utter despair, barely able to comprehend the crimes he had committed in his rage. However, before word of their actions could reach the other arms of the Imperium, the Iron Warriors once again received orders to move into action. This time it was to move to the Isstvan system, where the Dropsite Massacre would occur. Horus promised Perturabo not only forgiveness for his genocide on Olympia but even commended him for it. So Perturabo soon swore a secret oath of loyalty to the Warmaster. At last freed of the constraints that had bound him, Perturabo gave free reign to his most destructive urges, laying waste to world after world in the Warmaster's service. While one part of the IV Legion turned Olympia and its surrounding star systems into an "Empire of Iron," another lent its expertise to the Siege of Terra, and at last, the gene-sons of Perturabo could test themselves against those of Rogal Dorn.
Trivia
  • The Imperial Fists Campaign, which faces you against the Iron Warriors, is considered one of the hardest one for the fact that the Epic Boss (Perturabo) begins the match with an Iron Circle Troop already in play, and because of Perturabo Whisper's is activated from the start, it can keep summoning this Troop.
