Gems, or "Premium Coins", is the currency used to buy single Cards, Premium Cards and Cosmetics from the in-game Shop of The Horus Heresy: Legions.
At the moment, those are the only three items that can be bought with it (this might change in the future).
They are, in a way, the "hardest" currency to get, as it can only be done so by getting duplicate cards and randomly in Crates (much more random than Gold or Tickets), and cannot be bought with real money like the other currencies can.
The cost of items bought with Gems is always tied to the rarity of any card (Cosmetics are displayed as cards as well), being: 20 for Common cards, 100 for Rare cards, 400 for Epic cards, and 1600 for Legendary cards. When you get a duplicate of any item, you'll get a fourth of its cost (5, 20, 100 and 400, respectively).
The "true" objective of using Gems, it's to get cards (for completing your Deck or just for the collection aspect) and specially of higher rarities (that normally will be hard to get otherwise). All Crates or Event rewards might have the chance of giving you these types of cards, but after a while it'll be harder for you to pull one specific card (and more likely than not, you'll get a lot of duplicates), delaying your Deck completion, and in turn, your competitive presence.
This means, and because of the pricey cost of buying items this way plus the fact that the ones from a specific Faction only appear once a day (twice a month), that it is important to collect as many Gems as possible, so you'll be ready when the cards YOU want are in the Shop.
Earning Gems[]
You earn Gems by playing the game normally, through most types of Crates (be it because it gives them to you from the get go, or by the duplicates).
In any Crate that might have them (Free, Referral, Offer or Event Crates), the amount will vary between 2 and 15 Gems.
This leaves you with Event runs (for getting duplicates) as the "main" way of getting them (and the recommended one), and doing as many as possible will always be the best choice.
Premium Cards[]
Premium Cards are a unique type of Cosmetic that only affects playable cards, giving them a "visual flare". Beside being earned randomly, you can buy them with Gems (if you have the max collectable amount of that card) from the [Collection] tab in the "Cards" button. The price of them is also related to the card rarity, times four: 100 for Commons, 400 for Rares, 1600 for Epics and 6400 for Legendaries.
This means that if a Player is lucky enough, and pulls a Legendary Premium Card that it already has, it will net the necessary Gems to buy a regular Legendary Card (6400 cost=1600 Gems for the duplicate, again, a fourth of its price).
—Of course, this is a VERY hard thing to happen, so don't expect to see it often
