"Perfection... Anything less is not worthy of you"- Fulgrim, Primarch of the IIIth Legion

Faction Overview

The Emperor's Children (EC) are one of the playable Factions in The Horus Heresy: Legions. With an "easy to learn, hard to master" play style, the Faction is ideal for new players, and devastating in experienced ones. Their pool of cards support the most varied archetypes for deck building, striving for, like in their Lore and their unique trait, Perfection in everything they do. Control your enemy with Disorient (the second unique faction trait), and become a master of Tempo plays, always ahead of the curve. The Emperor's Children were the second Faction to be reworked, moving their original set of cards to Legacy.

Strengths:

  • One of, if not the best of, curve manipulation Faction.
  • A lot of freedom when building a deck, and overall great for starting players.
  • Perfection, beside giving you powerful effects, can be triggered multiple times in a turn (as long as the cost of the card is 0), allowing you to get ahead even faster.
  • Great at controlling how your enemy behaves and when, or if, it chooses to attack (with Disorient, Mission, etc.).

Weakness:

  • You have to be careful with stacking several cost reducing effects when trying to achieve Perfection, because you might fall short and ruin your strategy. In a way, making the decision making of a turn "shorter" with all the "math" involved.
  • Also in that regard, a lot of Perfection cards become underwhelming without triggering the trait, so if you're missing 1 energy or need 1 more, your impact in the match is weakened.
  • Disorient might be a double-edge sword in some scenarios, as it can leave units you want to protect eligible for attacks.
  • While you have many ways to make your decks, you'll need the specific cards for building the specific deck archetype to make it functional (a Duelist warlord will need Blade of the Laer, for example).

The EC Troops main gameplay revolves around varied "specific" support synergies with the rest of your Deck (like with Astartes, Vehicles or even to your Warlord), and disrupting the enemy in some way.

The EC Tactics main gameplay revolves around the disruption of the enemy and trying to shut them down.

Most of the EC Warlords focus on tempo plays and dueling.

Lore
The Emperor's Children were the III Legion, and the only Space Marine Legion to bear the Emperor's own name and His own icon, the Palatine Aquila, granted to them by His hand as a symbol of the Legion's martial perfection. Following his rediscovery on Chemos, Fulgrim was placed at the head of his Legion, stating "We are His children. Let all who look upon us know this. Only by imperfection can we fail him. We will not fail!" that day. Given the plaudits and accolades accorded them, few could doubt that they were the embodiment of what the Emperor had intended the Legiones Astartes to be: noble in action and aspect, excelling in all matters, strong, civilised, firm of purpose and loyal to the core. When the events that led to the Horus Heresy erupted, Fulgrim rushed to the Warmaster's side, attempting to reason with his old friend. Instead, Horus seduced him, playing upon his love of flawlessness to weaken Fulgrim's loyalty to the Emperor. Although Fulgrim initially resisted and wanted to speak out against Horus, the weapon he had taken from the world of Laeran actually contained a daemon of Slaanesh. This daemon had been whispering to Fulgrim since he picked it up and weakened his resolve to the point where Horus was able to sway him. The rot spread from Fulgrim to his Lord Commanders, then to company and squad leaders, and finally all but a bare handful of Marines followed Slaanesh rather than the Emperor. Now, they descended in treachery to the lowest and vilest of creatures, enslaved to pride and consumed by hedonistic desires that no natural power could fulfill. Anathema of what they were once. Ordered by the Warmaster, and convinced that he could make Ferrus Manus, his most beloved brother, join them, met with the Primarch of the Iron Hands and foolishly try to persuade him. This only angered the loyal Ferrus, who swore to bring Fulgrim back to sanity by force, or dead. When the Loyalist Salamanders, Raven Guard and Iron Hands Legions arrived in Istvaan V to face Horus and the Traitor Legions, the Emperor's Children eagerly took part in the fighting. The battlefield was a slaughterhouse of epic proportions, which was aggravated when the rest of the traitor legions fell upon the loyalist. Overwhelmed with rage, the headstrong Ferrus Manus disregarded the counsel of his brothers and hurled himself against the rebels, seeking to bring Fulgrim to personal combat. Fulgrim smiled as his brother renewed his attack into the heart of the Traitors' defensive lines. What follows is a battle of epic proportions, as only a duel between Primarchs can be. Ferrus almost manage to kill Fulgrim, but empowered with diabolical energy from his daemonic sword, Fulgrim got the upper hand, and decapitated his brother. However, instead of feeling victorious, the pain from slaying the one brother he had loved the most, make it realize how much he had been manipulated. Now broken, the Daemon in the sword easily took over his body, leaving only a shattered soul trap within. What will this Daemon of excess will do next, only time will tell...
