Faction Overview
The Alpha Legion (AL) are one of the playable Factions in The Horus Heresy: Legions. When every Faction is fighting a frontal war, the AL fights with one of subterfuge. Setting traps, delivering secret orders, infiltrating troops and overall disrupting the enemy, your play style will focus on completely shutting down what your opponent can do. Chaos and lies are your game, and you thrive on it. The Alpha Legion were the 10th Faction to be reworked, moving their original pool of cards to Legacy.
Strengths:
- One of the best "turned around to victory" type Faction, because even when it seems you're gonna lose, if your conditions start popping out they're not stopping. They're also one of the best "Control" type Faction.
- The most amount of jams, stuns, and generally ways to stop your enemy from playing.
- Great at milling your opponent, and turns giving them cards (normally a weakness) into a strength.
- Because of how secret orders work, you can force your enemy to make bad plays, or cautious, slower ones (which both benefit you).
- While experienced players may in most cases guess which warlord you're playing, new and not-so-new players will have a harder time figuring it out, which will give you advantage in how they'll respond to you.
Weakness:
- One of the worst Faction to have "filler cards" in a deck, or generally make decks that are not finely tuned. "Mish-mashing" your special cards leaves you with to many random chances, and a weaker presence in the match, so going for everything is no ideal (a deck with traps, secret orders, operatives, jams, stuns, etc. will rarely have the correct solution for any given time) and should only focus on combining two or three at most.
- This, in turn, means that is a "hard" Faction to use for new players.
- Too much RNG, that leads to inconsistent gameplay (can be mitigated, but it is still a factor).
- Overall weak troops.
- Not great against troop decks, mono-warlords, and hard-countered by Legio Custodes (if going for Traps).

The Alpha Legion, the Ghost Legion, or the XXth, was known as secretive in the extreme, favouring cunning ruses and clandestine deployments, and as such very little is known of its deeds. The accounts involving the Alpha Legion are regarded with outright skepticism, the misinformation surrounding them even extends to the nature and identity of its Primarch, Alpharius. It is said that Alpharius reveled in fighting in such a manner that his enemies only ever realised they were under attack at the very last moment. Such tactics are said to range from conventional flank attacks timed to strike at the precise moment when they would precipitate the enemy's complete collapse, to extended campaigns of infiltration, exploitation of partisan groups, undermining enemy command and control assets and spreading fear and suspicion through compromised communication networks. The Alpha Legion's most closely guarded secret, unbeknownst to all but a few outside the legion, is that they had two primarchs; Alpharius and his twin Omegon (sometimes referred to collectively as just 'Alpharius Omegon'). With every member classifying itself as Alpharius, certainly, the Alpha Legion fought in the manner of the mythical beast that adorns their armour -- the hydra -- for each time one head is cut off, another moves in to replace it. It is perhaps easy to see why the Alpha Legion sided with Horus when the Warmaster made his pact with Chaos; their martial pride and Alpharius' avoidance of all his brothers apart from Horus seemingly led to their downfall. However, another given reason is that, a scant two years before the Horus Heresy began, Alpharius Omegon was contacted by a Xenos organisation known as the Cabal, which presented the Primarch with visions of the Heresy to come and other predictions of the future as well as knowledge about the nature of Chaos. They showed him that if the Emperor won, Chaos will consume everything in the end, while if Horus won, Chaos (and humanity) would perish. The Alpha Legion was asked to take on their greatest challenge; to defect to the side of Horus and ensure the final destruction of Chaos. Alpharius Omegon appeared to accede to this request, embarking in war of subterfuge against the loyalist. Alpharius was eventually charged by and with Horus himself to spearhead the traitor advance into the Sol System, leading a large fleet against Pluto in the opening shots of the Solar War. During the battle, Alpharius was seemingly killed by Rogal Dorn but this, as with everything involving the Alpha Legion, could just be a lie... |
